Launching of CPBEP Gender Mentoring Model

To sustain the initiatives taken by CPBEP and keep the dialogue of gender mainstreaming alive in partner institutions, a Gender Mentoring Model has been developed by the project based on the Gender Mentoring Framework and protocols. An event was held to introduce the model to the appointed gender focal persons who are the mentees/gender champions and the mentors. The participants included gender focal persons from partner institutions and a pool of gender mentors based in respective cities of partner institutions. The sessions specifically highlighted the significance and tools to empower women including the role of men in this regard and track empowerment and change. The launch of CPBEP Gender Mentoring Model is a way forward to institutionalize gender mainstreaming in partner institutions and, even beyond that, through actors of change i.e. the mentors and the mentees. In this regard, a detailed action plan was developed for the year forward to implement this mentoring framework.

DUSK TILL DAWN...
A  Story of Change and Disillusionment!

My name is Mohammad Ahmad. I work as a Senior Subject Specialist in Government College for Elementary Teachers, Rangeelpur. There was a time when I was totally against notions like Gender equity and equality, women rights and liberty. My fundamental beliefs in our customary social and cultural values made me a firm conformist. To me, it was all a western plan to ruin our socio-cultural norms and family set up. I believed that Non-Muslim countries had strategically planned to spread vulgarity in our society by dragging our women out of the homes and bringing them out on to the streets, offices and other public places.

Participation in various workshops related to gender awareness and discrimination under the umbrella of CPBEP revealed another picture to me, which is altogether opposite to what I had perceived. These awareness raising sessions have disillusioned me. I learned that women are victims. They are treated as objects and puppets in this male chauvinistic society. A woman’s is considered no more than a domestic animal; she works laboriously from dusk till dawn without any acknowledgement let alone appreciation. Adding to this, society makes her feel unsafe and apprehensive due to an environment of insecurity and harassment.

My perception of the notion of gender equality and equity has changed. I understand that CPBEP is striving to bring change in the lives of women though raising awareness about their rights, making them aware of their capabilities and developing their skills and capacities. This has made me realize that such change in our society will not only emancipate women from stereotypical beliefs but also eventually prove beneficial for men. Women working and taking part in every walk of life will share the workload and make the world a better place for all.
